Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Massachusetts

PHP is the most structured level of outpatient care at Grand Rising — five days a week of group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric services in a full daily schedule. It is built for adults stabilizing after a hospitalization, moving through a behavioral health crisis, or finding that session-based therapy hasn't held.

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at Grand Rising Behavioral Health is the most structured level of outpatient care we offer. Five days a week, for roughly five hours a day, you take part in a full daily schedule of group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric services — delivered in person at our Norwood location or via telehealth for eligible Massachusetts residents. It is a full clinical day without a hospital stay: you return home each afternoon and practice what you are learning in real life.

PHP serves adults who need more than weekly appointments can provide — people stabilizing after a hospitalization, moving through a behavioral health crisis, or discovering that session-based therapy simply hasn't held. Many of our clients arrive treating anxiety, depression, or trauma alongside substance use or another co-occurring condition.

Structure is the point. When symptoms are acute, long gaps between appointments leave too much room for things to unravel. A predictable daily rhythm — the same team, the same schedule, daily clinical contact — creates the stability from which real therapeutic work becomes possible.

Who PHP Is Designed For

PHP is built for adults who need daily clinical support while continuing to live at home. It may be the right level of care if you are:

  • Stepping down after a hospitalization — you have been stabilized in an inpatient setting and need a structured bridge back into daily life.
  • In a behavioral health crisis — symptoms have escalated beyond what weekly or even twice-weekly therapy can contain, but you are safe living at home.
  • Finding that session-based therapy hasn't held — you have worked with a therapist, but symptoms keep breaking through between appointments.
  • Managing co-occurring conditions — mental health and substance use challenges that reinforce each other and need integrated, daily attention.
  • In need of close psychiatric oversight — starting or adjusting medication is safer and steadier when your prescriber sees how you are actually doing, day to day.

What's Included in PHP

  • Group and individual therapy, every day. Both are woven into each day's schedule — group work builds skills and connection, while individual sessions go deeper into your specific history and goals.
  • Psychiatric services inside the program. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management happen within PHP itself, so your prescriber and your therapists are working from the same picture.
  • Evidence-based modalities. Treatment draws on CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care, matched to what you are working on rather than applied one-size-fits-all.
  • In person or via telehealth. Attend at our Norwood location, or join by telehealth if you are an eligible Massachusetts resident.

Conditions We Treat in PHP

Group therapy session at Grand Rising Behavioral Health

PHP at Grand Rising treats adults living with mental health conditions, substance use, and — very often — the combination of the two. One integrated team treats the whole picture, rather than sending you to separate programs for separate diagnoses.

  • Anxiety — panic, persistent worry, and anxiety that has begun to shrink daily life.
  • Depression — including depression that has not responded to weekly therapy or medication alone.
  • PTSD and trauma — addressed through trauma-informed care and evidence-based therapies including EMDR.
  • Substance use and co-occurring conditions — dual-diagnosis care that treats substance use and the mental health conditions that so often travel with it, together.

What to Expect: From Admissions to First Session

Three simple steps from your first call to your first session — no referral needed.

1

Confidential Consult → Clinical Assessment → Personalized Plan

Call our 24/7 admissions line or send a message. We'll ask about symptoms, safety needs, and your goals, then schedule a comprehensive assessment. Your clinician will recommend the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) & Outpatient Program (OP) based on functioning, risk, and availability, and will explain why.

2

Insurance Verification & Cost Transparency

Grand Rising Behavioral Health is out-of-network for insurance. Many clients with PPO plans use out-of-network benefits; others choose private pay. Our team will verify benefits, estimate costs and deductible implications, and provide documentation to help with reimbursement.

PHP Frequently Asked Questions

How is PHP different from inpatient hospitalization?+

Inpatient care means being admitted to a hospital around the clock. PHP delivers a comparable intensity of daily treatment — therapy and psychiatric care about five hours a day, five days a week — but you live at home and return to your own routine each evening. For many adults, it is the step that follows a hospitalization or helps prevent one.

Do you take insurance for PHP?+

Grand Rising is an out-of-network provider. We work with PPO plans that include out-of-network benefits, and we accept private pay. Our admissions team will verify your benefits before you start so you know what to expect financially — call us today and we will handle the legwork.

How long does PHP last?+

There is no fixed length, and we don't promise one. Your care team reviews your progress regularly and recommends how long PHP should continue based on how you are actually doing. When you are ready, most clients step down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) rather than ending treatment abruptly.

Is PHP available through telehealth?+

Yes. Eligible Massachusetts residents can complete PHP via telehealth, with the same daily schedule of groups, individual sessions, and psychiatric services as the in-person program at our Norwood location.

How do I get started?+

Call our 24/7 admissions line — it is answered 365 days a year. We will talk through what is going on, verify your out-of-network benefits, and schedule a clinical assessment to confirm that PHP is the right level of care for you.
