When relationships feel tense or confusing, it shows up everywhere, at work, at home, even in your sleep. Individual therapy at Grand Rising gives you a steady space to unpack patterns, build practical skills, and make clearer choices, whether you're mending a relationship, navigating a breakup, or learning to relate to others with more ease and self-respect. Individual therapy is not offered as a standalone service at Grand Rising Behavioral Health. It's included as a core component of our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Outpatient Program (OP), alongside group therapy, psychiatric support, and skills work as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
You don't have to tackle all of this at once. Within your treatment program, your clinician will help you choose one or two high-leverage areas to start, so you can see progress without feeling overwhelmed.
Our most structured outpatient level of care. PHP blends group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric services into a full daily schedule — built for adults who need the daily rhythm to stabilize after a hospitalization, during a behavioral health crisis, or when session-based therapy hasn't held.
Programming designed for adults transitioning toward greater independence while still needing consistent clinical support. This is where most of our clients spend the longest stretch of treatment — stepping down from PHP or stepping up from session-based therapy that isn't enough on its own.
A short-term step-down phase after a structured program — focused on reinforcing the skills you built and handing off to your long-term community provider. It isn't an entry point and it isn't ongoing therapy. Admission to our programming goes through PHP or IOP first.

Within your program, your clinician draws on evidence-based modalities and explains why each approach is being used, so therapy feels collaborative rather than mysterious.
Untangle automatic assumptions ("If I disagree, they'll leave"), test them with behavior experiments, and replace unhelpful thinking with more accurate interpretations.
Build emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness (e.g., DEAR MAN, GIVE, FAST) to advocate for your needs while protecting the relationship.
Process earlier relational or attachment wounds that may intensify current reactions. If EMDR fits your goals, learn more on our EMDR Therapy page.
Pair acceptance skills with values-driven action, especially when anxiety or perfectionism complicate connection.
Solution-focused strategies
Identify "exceptions" (times when things go slightly better), then replicate and scale them into repeatable wins.
You and your clinician will decide together which tools are most relevant, and you'll adjust as your needs change throughout your program.
Three simple steps from your first call to your first session — no referral needed.
Call our 24/7 admissions line or send a message. We'll ask about symptoms, safety needs, and your goals, then schedule a comprehensive assessment. Your clinician will recommend the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) & Outpatient Program (OP) based on functioning, risk, and availability, and will explain why.
Grand Rising Behavioral Health is out-of-network for insurance. Many clients with PPO plans use out-of-network benefits; others choose private pay. Our team will verify benefits, estimate costs and deductible implications, and provide documentation to help with reimbursement.
Next step: Get clear cost estimates before you start.
Verify InsuranceWhen clinically appropriate, secure telehealth sessions are available to Massachusetts residents. We'll confirm eligibility, technology needs, and whether your specific program (e.g., the Intensive Outpatient Program) can be offered virtually or in a hybrid format.
Real change in relationships often begins with your skills and choices. In your individual sessions, delivered as part of your Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or Outpatient Program (OP), we'll translate broad goals like "communicate better" into specific behaviors you can practice between sessions and apply throughout the rest of your treatment week.
Shift from criticism to specific requests; learn repair steps that de-escalate conflict and keep conversations on track.
Understand your "trigger stack," use grounding and paced breathing, and respond rather than react.
Set limits in plain, respectful words; build tolerance for discomfort after you set a boundary.
Values-aligned decisions
Identify core values and use them to guide choices about staying, leaving, or renegotiating dynamics.
Rebuilding self-trust
Notice red and green flags sooner, and act in ways that align with your standards.
These skills don't require your partner to be in the room. As you change your part of the pattern, the system around you often shifts too.
Licensed, trauma-informed clinicians who explain the "why" behind each tool.
Individual therapy is delivered within complete treatment programs, drawing from CBT, DBT, EMDR, and other evidence-based approaches.
A practical, skills-first approach you can apply between sessions and throughout your treatment week.
Flexible access with in-person sessions and telehealth where clinically appropriate, across Massachusetts.
Transparent out-of-network and private-pay billing, with PPO claims submitted on your behalf (coverage not guaranteed).
Session: Confidential Assessment & Goal-Setting
During your program intake, your clinician will map your relationship history, current stressors, and strengths. Together, you'll choose one to three goals that are both meaningful and realistic for your schedule.
Individual sessions within your program + between-session practice
Individual therapy is offered only alongside our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Outpatient Program (OP). The frequency and length of your one-to-one sessions are set by the program you're enrolled in. You'll leave each session with one or two small practice items (e.g., a boundary script, a breathing exercise, or a conversation plan) to apply across the rest of your treatment week.
Measuring Progress
Every few weeks, your clinician will review what's changing and what's stuck. The plan is adjusted, skills are added or removed, and care is coordinated with other providers as part of your wider program.
Tapering, maintenance, or stepping up care
As progress is made, your treatment team may step you down to a less intensive level of care. If symptoms spike or you need more structure, you can step up within our broader levels of care. The Services hub explains how Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Outpatient Program (OP) fit together.
When individual therapy within one of our programs is the better first step:
When we may recommend couples therapy (or a referral)

No. Individual therapy is not a standalone service at Grand Rising Behavioral Health. It's included in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Outpatient Program (OP).
By changing your part of the pattern, how you communicate, regulate emotions, and set boundaries, you can shift the dynamic. Your sessions focus on practical scripts, regulation tools, and decision-making aligned with your values.
The frequency and length of your individual sessions are set by the program you're enrolled in (Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or Outpatient Program (OP)). The duration depends on your goals, history, and external stressors; your clinician will review progress regularly and adjust the plan with you.
Yes. We provide HIPAA-compliant video sessions, where clinically appropriate, for clients located anywhere in Massachusetts at the time of the appointment.
Grand Rising operates as an out-of-network provider and private-pay practice. If you have out-of-network benefits (such as a PPO plan), we'll verify your benefits and submit claims on your behalf. Coverage varies by plan and is not guaranteed.
Your clinician will clarify what's bringing you in, map a few key patterns, and set one to three initial goals as part of your program intake. You'll leave with a small, concrete next step — often a communication tool or boundary script to try.
Individual therapy focuses on your experiences, choices, and skills. Couples therapy works on patterns between partners in the room. Grand Rising does not provide couples therapy directly; if couples work is the right fit, we'll discuss referrals.
