Feeling Stuck? Signs You Might Need
Structured Support

If weekly therapy isn’t enough and symptoms disrupt work, school, or relationships, a program with more time,
structure, and skills practice can create momentum.

Common Symptoms & Day-to-Day Impacts

Persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

Fatigue, low motivation, or the feeling of “moving through mud”

Changes in sleep or appetite

Trouble concentrating or making decisions; missed deadlines or classes

Social withdrawal, conflict with loved ones, or isolation

When Day Treatment  vs  Structured Outpatient vs. Weekly Standard Outpatient May Be Appropriate

Day Treatment suits people who need a daily, highly structured setting to stabilize their mood and build skills quickly.

Structured Outpatient Program fits when you need more than weekly therapy, but also must maintain work, school, or caregiving.

Standard Outpatient works well for maintenance and relapse prevention, or as a step-down after Day Treatment/Structured Outpatient Program.

If you’re comparing depression treatment centers available to Massachusetts residents, focus on the level of structure you need now and the plan for step-down care later

Levels of  Care for Depression at Grand Rising

Day Treatment Program

5 days a week
approx 5 hours a day

Our most structured outpatient level of care. Day Treatment blends group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric services into a full daily schedule — built for adults who need the daily rhythm to stabilize after a hospitalization, during a behavioral health crisis, or when session-based therapy hasn't held.

Program components

Group and individual therapy woven into every day

Psychiatric services delivered inside the program

CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care

In-person at our Norwood campus or via telehealth

Structured Outpatient Program

3–5 days a week
approx 3 hours a day

Programming designed for adults transitioning toward greater independence while still needing consistent clinical support. This is where most of our clients spend the longest stretch of treatment — stepping down from Day Treatment or stepping up from session-based therapy that isn't enough on its own.

Program components

Group and individual work at a lower daily intensity

Same psychiatric services and modalities as Day Treatment

Designed to fit alongside part-time work or phased return

In-person or via telehealth

Standard Outpatient

1 day a week
approx 1–3 hours a day

A short-term step-down phase after a structured program — focused on reinforcing the skills you built and handing off to your long-term community provider. It isn't an entry point and it isn't ongoing therapy. Admission to our programming goes through Day Treatment or Structured Outpatient first.

Program components

Short, time-limited transition phase

Reinforces coping and regulation skills

Supports handoff to a community outpatient provider

Available to clients who've completed a structured program with us

Therapies We Use (Evidence-Based & Personalized)

We use approaches with strong research support for depression, always tailored to you. Here’s how the
core modalities help:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Behavioral Activation

We work with the connection between thoughts, behaviors, and mood, then plan small, manageable actions to increase positive experiences. Behavioral activation helps you reconnect with meaningful activities, even when motivation is low.

DBT-Informed Skills

You’ll learn emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness skills that interrupt spirals and support steadier days. We apply DBT skills in a practical, depression-focused way.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

Depression often affects (and is affected by) relationships. IPT targets role transitions, grief, and conflict patterns, helping you communicate needs and strengthen support.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

MBCT blends mindfulness with CBT strategies to reduce rumination and increase awareness of early mood shifts, so you can respond rather than react.

Medication Management

Psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management are available when indicated. Your prescriber will discuss options, benefits, and side effects in plain language and collaborate with you on the plan that fits you.

FAQs about Depression Treatment Services in Massachusetts

What’s the difference between Day Treatment & Structured Outpatient Program for depression?

Day Treatment is the most structured outpatient level, think daily programming with multiple groups and medical support. Structured Outpatient Program is several half-days per week. Both are more intensive than weekly therapy; the right fit depends on your symptom severity, safety, and how much structure you need to function well at home.

Does insurance cover Structured Outpatient Program/Day Treatment for depression in Massachusetts?

Many plans offer some coverage for Day Treatment/Structured Outpatient Program, especially PPO policies with out-of-network benefits. Exact coverage, copays, and deductibles vary. We’ll verify your benefits and explain options before you begin.

How long until I might see improvement?

It varies. Some people notice changes within the first few weeks as skills and routines build; others need more time or a different mix of therapies and/or medication. Your team will adjust the plan with you.

Which therapies are most effective for depression?

Research supports CBT, behavioral activation, IPT, MBCT, and DBT-informed skills for mood regulation. The most effective plan is personalized; we’ll match approaches to your goals and monitor progress.

Do you offer telehealth for depression treatment in Massachusetts?

Yes, when clinically appropriate, portions of programming (including some groups and individual sessions) can be delivered via secure telehealth to reduce travel barriers.

How do I start? What happens at the first assessment?

We’ll review your history, current symptoms, safety needs, medications, and goals. Together we’ll decide the level of care, set measurable objectives, and schedule your start date.
